ARCORES Philippines has launched an emergency action for immediate assistance to those affected by Typhoon Rai. The emergency assistance consists of distribution of drinking water, sacks of rice, food packs and bread, through Kindness Bakeries that have been operating since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic.
Typhoon Rai, which hit the Philippine archipelago, has had devastating effects on five islands in Bohol, Southern Leyte, Negros, Cebu, Mindanao – Surigao, Iligan and Dinagat Islands) with greater destruction than Typhoon Yolanda.
“At the moment it is too early to estimate the number of victims, reaching already 375 deaths and 56 missing, but the information we have from the various offices of ARCORES Philippines and the Augustinian Recollect family in the country, is that the destruction of homes and infrastructure is very large. Estimated number of displaced persons have reached 490,000 people. Many people have lost their homes and livelihoods. Entire populations in the affected islands have no drinking water supply or electricity. The response to the population is urgent”, Javier Sánchez, ARCORES’ Director, says.
ARCORES Philippines is already active in Negros Occidental (Bacolod, San Carlos), Cebu and Mindanao. In Cebu, bags of rice (30 bags/day) and bags of bread have already been distributed to the population (1000 pieces per day prepared by the Augustinian Recollect nuns); also in Negros and Mindanao (30 bags of rice/day).
For water distribution, ARCORES Philippines in Cebu is preparing logistics for water distribution as this is a pressing problem in Cebu City and the whole island. Likewise, ARCORES Philippines is working to bring potable water to the people of Southern Negros.
ARCORES Philippines and the Augustinian Recollect family have mobilized an immediate budget of about 20,000 € and the emergency assistance being provided is reaching hundreds of families. It is appealing as well through the ARCORES International network for urgent assistance to provide basic food and water to the affected population.
At the same time, ARCORES Philippines continues to do damage assessment with the affected people to respond in a second phase of the emergency to rebuild houses, as thousands of families have lost their homes.
